Slaughtering the support for Tor Browser 13.5.29 (that works perfectly
on Windows 7) is a crime against humanity [an open letter to the Tor Project
team from a Russian user]
Sunsetting Tor 0.4.8 – Please update to 0.4.9 by
September
https://blog.torproject.org/sunsetting-tor-048
As you know, different teams inside the Tor Project are working on the Arti Relay project where we hope to be able to begin the upgrade of the network towards our Rust implementation of Tor in the near future. To support this work, we would like to announce that we intend to actively stop compatibility for 0.4.8 and earlier C Tor versions soon. This means that these versions will no longer work on the network at all after our target date, which is currently September 1st, 2026.
What you are going to do is a
total disaster for thousands of people. Quite many people still use
Windows 7, especially in the former USSR countries. Windows 7 is strongly
underestimated and Windows 10 and 11 are strongly overestimated. Microsoft
dudes are just impudent hucksters, big biz pigs whose only goal and desire is
to suck out of people as much money as possible. Windows 7 is the last
user-friendly OS from Microsoft. In Windows 10 and especially in Windows 11
users lose control over their own PCs, Microsoft becomes the owner of their
computers and to top it all off – also a “Big Brother”.
Stopping the support of the legacy Tor Browser for Windows 7, you cut off thousands of people from uncensored Internet – and you make Mr. Poo-Tin very happy. Do you want a medal from Mr. Poo-Tin, the Great Bloody Poo? I am afraid he won’t give you a medal – what a disappointment!
Every day people in Russia get
arrested, tortured, incarcerated and sent to the Great Bloody Poo’s Gulag. The
regime in Russia is worse than in Stalin’s USSR and in Hitler’s Nazi-Germany. Although
the scale of terror is not as broad as in Stalin’s Soviet Union and in Hitler’s
Third Reich, the current repressions are more brutal. Independent information
is urgently needed. Access to independent information is the first step to
resistance. No information – no resistance. And you now, together with
Poo-Tin, cut off people from independent information. You commit a
crime against humanity and human rights. Do you really understand what you
are doing?
Currently only one VPN service for Windows 7 functions in Russia and only its free version is available for Russian users with the monthly Internet traffic limited to 10 GB – approximately 322.5 MB daily) (this service is unable to receive payments from Russia for its premium version). Well, it is better than nothing at all, but it is too little.
You want to upgrade your network… I want to suggest, you should create a separate network that supports the old versions of Tor Browser that are compatible with Windows 7.
